Movie Review - The Last AirBender

Plot synopsis: The story follows the adventures of Aang, a young successor to a long line of Avatars, who must put his childhood ways aside and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations.

I have serious doubt going in for this show as almost 90% of the people I have spoken to about this movie, gave it the thumbs down. So it was with much trepidation that I parted with my hard earned dollars for ticket

You might ask why? Because I was really fond of the cartoon and I would regret it if I missed this one.

So, was it really that bad? Suprisingly, NO. I found myself quite entertainted by the movie. Forget about storyline or dialogue, this movie is all about fantasy and entertainment. It's about having a good time not killing those brain cells with serious thinking. Not brainwork needed at all.

Maybe it was the low expectations before going in but I like it. The CGI was good and the storyline not that bad. Also it was not boring, which is one of my criteria for lambasting a movie. Here the pace is good, and you're kept entertained throughout the movie.

Acting skills for most of the actors is very much encouraged but hey, this movie is not about thespian acting. And the young boy Aang, played by child actor Noah Ringer is suprisingly good.

Book Review - Private by James Patterson

Private is the latest offering from prolific writer James Patterson, he of the Alex Cross series. Here he again teams up with Maxine Pietro to deliver another high caliber mystery novel that will have the hallmarks of a good James Patterson novel: mystery, intrigue, suspense and a little romance by the side. The writing is clear and fast pace so it reads easily.
This is co-authors second collaboration after the Women’s Murder Club series

Plot Synopsis;
Jack Morgan is head of Private a well known private investigation company . In this debut novel, Jack has his hands full will cases running from a NFL betting scandal, the murder of his best friend’s wife and the unsolved killings of schoolgirls in the city.

Jack Morgan is a former army veteran who now runs, Private, the private investigative company to the rich and famous. Jack inherited the company from his father and turned it into a multi million corporation with branches around the world. In this book, the readers follow Jack as he tries to solve a NFL betting scandal and also the sudden murder of his best friend’s trophy, who also happens to be Jack’s former crush.

Jack ‘s right hand person in the firm is Janice, who had a previous relationship with Jack but broke up with no hard feelings. Both of them are called in to help the city police to solve a series of murders to young schoolgirls. Jack has also to contend with issues regarding his younger brother, who is insanely jealous of Jack. To top it off, Jack is having a relationship with his assistant to deliver a very suprising twist to end the book.

All in all, this book is a very good and easy read for all Patterson fans. The pace is quick and any reader should be able to go through the book quite easily. The chapters are well though off and keeps you wanting to read more.

Based on the many James Patterson books that have been turned into movies or tv series, I won’t be surprise that this book will make its way to the silver screen in the near future.

Movie Review - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Plot Synopsis: A disgraced journalist, Mikael Bloomkist, is hired by an eccentric billionaire to investigate a disappearance of his niece 40 years ago. The billionaire is convinced that a member of his family is responsible for this dastardly act . Together, with a computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander, they travelled to a small town in Sweden to unravel this mystery and discover what actually happened that many years ago.

This has got to be one of the best shows of the year. It is a murder mystery with an excellent storyline and unpredictable ending. I am not going to give away the ending but suffice to say, the show stays truthful to the book, which is also an excellent novel.

Noomi Rapace gives an accurate portrayal of the protagonist and for those who have read the book, you can actually see the semblance of Lisbeth Salander in here. I am not too impressed with Mikael Nyqvist because I felt that he was too staid as the main protagonist Mikael Bloomkist. I can't wait to see Daniel Craig taking this role in the American remake which is currently filming.

The movie's whodunnit theme and edgy camerawork manages to keep story in suspense and the audience will definitely be at the edge of the seats throughout the movie. I know I was, and I have already read the book. All in all, I left the theater extremely satisfied that one of my favourites books was successfully turned into a movie. One bit of advice though, go see the movie before reading the book. You will enjoy the movie better and will have a better understading when reading the book.

TV Series Review - Leverage Season 3 Opener

Season 3 continues right after the Season 2 cliffhanger, with Nathan Ford in a private prison after being caught by the FBI in a failed con.

Also at the end of the season 2 finale, we were shown that Sophie is back with the gang and the team's immediate concern is to get Nate out of prison. Their good intentions are thwarted however, as the prisoner refuses to go along with the plan.

In prison Nate befriends a young inmate who has been harshly sentenced to imprisonment for a negligible misdemeanor.  This was all arranged by the prison director through corrupted judges  because he needs to maintain a high inmate ratio to keep the prison afloat. The gang then hatches a con to expose the director and save Nate and his friend.

Predictably there is not much change to the format of the show, given it's consistently high rating but rather than staying mundane, the creators have still managed to maintain the excitement in each episode, as the twist and turns of the storyline is fairly unpredictable.

In this third season opener, we are also introduce to the “Italian”, a mysterious lady played by the delightful Elizabetta,Canalis who blackmails the team into taking down a well known mobster. Ms Canalis, or Lady Clooney would be appearing in several episodes throughout this season as the the team plan tackle the mobster.

Blackberry App Review

In what has been the news most of the user of Blackberry devices in Malaysia were waiting for, RIM finally announced that local users in Malaysia can now purchase paid apps from Blackberry AppWorld by credit cards.

There are more than a million Blackberry users in Malaysia and previously, the only way for purchasing apps from the AppWorld was through a PayPal account. Many have cried out for an easier micro payment system similar to iTunes and RIM has finally answered.

Together with the credit card payment facilities, the Blackberry AppWorld user interface has also been enhanced to include features such as a Top 25 list and a new updated apps list.

Iphone App Review - Nimbuzz

Nimbuzz is a social networking platform that integrates chat, messaging and VOIP all in one platform. It also offers the ability to connect to the multiple social networking services out the in the market.

Unlike other platforms, nimbuzz does have one added advantage of it's competitors: it's connectivity to Skype. Of all the social networking/messaging apps in the iTunes store, this is the only app which includes Skype as one of the services.

Skype is definitely the most popular Internet voip services out there and the abilty to communicate with your skype members in one platform as live messenger, ebuddy, facebook etc in extremely convenient.

The log in and connecting times is fairly quick and the network is very stable. I have been using this for more than a year and I have not problems in connectivity all.

Definitely the best social messaging platform on iTunes.

Movie Review - Eclipse

Synopsis: As a string of mysterious killings grips Seattle, Bella, whose high school graduation is fast approaching, is forced to choose between her love for vampire Edward and her friendship with werewolf Jacob.

Is it me but when has vampires become so effeminate? Count Dracula must seriously be turning over in the grave looking at how his heritage has fallen to. Gone were the days where vampires looked dashing and mysterious, now they all looking like sissy boys. Seriously, not only Edward but Jasper and Riley look terrible in a non-manly way. The Worst part of it, the chicks digg this kind of look. In our world, there is no way a girl would take Edward the sissy over a hunk like Jacob.

Ok, now that's off my chest, on to the movie. Well, the only consolation I can give to the movie is that it is better than the previous one, New Moon. The is still the same, Bella is still the undecided over her feelings for the vampire and the werewolf. This makes the entire show draggy as the theme kept repeating itself in scenes after scenes. Hopefully this theme will be kept to the minimum by the time the next movie comes out.

Personally, the subplot about Victoria creating an army to revenge Bella saves the movie from being the another New Moon. The battle scenes are fast paced and action packed which will wake you up should you have fallen asleep before reaching it.

Oh another thing that keep me going throughout the movie: Ashley Greene.
